How can we help?

My parents need some extra help

Often, a particular incident is the catalyst for a change. Adult family members usually have some understanding, to varying degrees, of the difficulties aging parents are experiencing at home, but an incident such as a fall or other accident can increase the sense of urgency and provide more tangible evidence that mom or dad needs additional help, sooner rather than later.

Depending on what kind of help your parents need, perhaps they don't need to move. Home care or home healthcare may be an option for them. If your parent or parents need more care than can be provided at home, they may require assisted living or rehabilitative and skilled care.

Parents can fear losing their independence to the point they deny there’s any need for help, even when they know otherwise. You can help them overcome this by acknowledging their feelings and encouraging them to talk, as well as by helping them find senior living solutions that maximize their independence and where they can become excited about the opportunities to make new friends and experience a sense of belonging.
